TERM DEFINITION
Label
Any written, printed, or graphic material displayed on or affixed to containers
of hazardous chemicals.
Material Safety Data
Sheet (MSDS)
Written or printed material concerning a hazardous chemical which is
prepared in accordance with OSHA Standard 1910.1200 requirements.
Mixture
Any combination of two or more chemicals if the combination is not, in whole
or in part, the result of a chemical reaction.
Oxidizer
A chemical other than a blasting agent or explosive as defined in
1910.109(a) that initiates or promotes combustion in other materials, thereby
causing fire either of itself or through the release of oxygen or other gases.
Physical hazard
A chemical that it is a combustible liquid, a compressed gas, explosive,
flammable, an organic peroxide, an oxidizer, pyrophoric, unstable (reactive)
or water-reactive.
Pyrophoric
A chemical that will ignite spontaneously in air at a temperature of 130 deg.
F. or below.
Specific chemical
identity
The chemical name, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Number, or
any other information that reveals the precise chemical designation of the
substance.
Unstable (reactive)
A chemical which in the pure state, or as produced or transported, will
vigorously polymerize, decompose, condense, or will become self-reactive
under conditions of shocks, pressure, or temperature.
Use
To package, handle, react, emit, extract, generate as a byproduct, or
transfer.
Water-reactive
A chemical that reacts with water to release a gas that is either flammable or
presents a health hazard.
Work area
A room or defined space in a workplace where hazardous chemicals are
produced or used, and where employees are present.
Workplace
An establishment, job site, or project, at one geographical location containing
one or more work areas.
Section 7 - Hazard Recognition
This Hazard Communication and Chemical Safety Program is primarily a hazard recognition program.
Elements such as, product warning labels and material safety data sheets, detailed in the sections that
follow provide useful tools and knowledge enabling employees to identify hazardous chemicals in the work
place.
